A simple analysis of the nine steps in the process of woodcarving production

2023-06

The woodcarving production process includes: woodworking, spinning, cutting, chiseling, shoveling, filing, grinding, coloring, waxing, painting, etc.
1. Woodwork: Refers to the cooperation of carpentry in the production of components to be carved, including furniture components, basic contours of circular carving, and so on.
2. Spinning: Refers to the production of components to be carved, such as the outer shape and inner chamber of the pen holder, the face of the wooden base, teeth, waist reduction, and so on, in collaboration with wooden spinning workers.
3. Carving: Refers to using a steel wire saw to carve out flower boards according to patterns, achieving a similar silhouette effect for later use in carving.
The above is the preparation process for carving.
4. Chisel: Using a chisel, axe, or hammer, first remove the raw material and chisel out the basic shape, then finely chisel until the work is basically formed, preparing for shovel and dispatch work.
5. Shovel: Use a shovel chisel for fine processing, until there is no trace of waste and the design requirements are met, and then use a sliding hook to dispatch the work to the best effect.
6. Filing: A wooden file is an auxiliary tool for chisels, especially for walls with hollowed out flower boards. It plays a significant role.
7. Grinding: The traditional method is to first blow up the wood thorns by passing water, and then use sandpaper or file grass to grind out pulp to make the surface of the wood carving smooth and clean. Nowadays, high grade sandpaper is often used instead, which has the same effect.
8. Coloring: This is a deep technical knowledge. When adding ingredients to a work, even if it is watered down, color differences may occur. It is entirely up to experienced painters to lighten or darken the light colors to make them consistent in color.
9. Waxing: Waxing is a surface treatment method for high-end handicrafts. The traditional method is to use Sichuan wax and honey wax to mix different formulas according to different seasons to make wax paste. It is baked into the wood with charcoal fire, and the remaining wax is removed after the wax cools.
